Abstract:
This study explores the use of open-access AI tools to enhance the effectiveness of a Sepedi-language rabies awareness chatbot. Rabies continues to be reported in South Africa, with cases typically identified late in the incubation period. This project develops a chatbot application that delivers rabies awareness content to users who speak the Sepedi language, helping to reduce communication barriers between health education content and non-English-speaking communities. Various LLMs are tested to determine which translates most effectively into the Sepedi language. The successful implementation of such a tool would improve the accessibility of health information for Sepedi-speaking individuals in South Africa and increase awareness and health-related behaviours within those populations.
